History of Gay Bars Phoenix

While Phoenix may not be big and bright like Las Vegas or New York, and it may not have the history that those places, it has a lot to say for itself. Kaye’s Happy Landing Buffet opened in Phoenix in 1941, a popular lesbian bar operated by owner Kaye Elledge for 25 years. Rae Bourbon got his start as a female impersonator at gay bars such as Roy’s Buffet right here in Phoenix. In the early 1950s, the gay bar 307 hosted many drag queens in its cabaret-style lounge.

Throughout the late 1950s when it was becoming more and more apparent that part of the population was homosexual, certain bars in Phoenix would accept them as patrons to do as they wished. They were not advertised as gay bars; they were just bars that accepted everyone who walked through their doors. They became a safe haven for the gay community and have allowed them to grow as a whole. Ever since then it has been a warm and accepting part of the north west. Phoenix on its own does not need the big flashy lights that other cities have. It has down home country roots that relies on each other in both the heterosexual and gay community. Phoenix has kept the positivity going in hopes to give our younger gay community a chance to live free and not deal with certain hardships that past gay members have dealt with. Gay Bars Phoenix is here to stay, and we are proud to be apart of it everyday. More information can be found at the AZ central.
