What does it mean to be brave?
That’s the question that Cynthia Germanotta, aka the real Mother Monster aka the mother to Lady Gaga posed in an email this morning. We’ve told all you hot boys of ManPlay before about the new organization that she and her daughter have just created, the Born This Way Foundation. They’re still getting things set up but have created an appeal for interested people to write in about what it means to be brave. A sampling of the apparent thousands of entries they have received are below.
Being yourself because that’s who you are, not being who people want you to be.
-Jaay C. from California
Being who you are. And thanks to my little sister that was born with Down syndrome who showed me that nothing is impossible and that it’s the little things that make you unique.
-Jean E. from Virginia
As a USAF veteran, a lesbian, and a mentor for a LGBTQS Youth Group, the word “bravery” holds a spectrum of different meanings for me. Bravery means the courage to put your life on the line to go into battle. Bravery means being yourself despite the pressure that family, friends and society places on you to be someone different.
-Ashley from Kentucky
This got me thinking: What does being brave mean to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts so be sure to leave them in the comments below.
On the subject of bravery, how brave is it for this kid to have posted this video? Set to Sia’s haunting Breathe Me (many a gay man will remember it from the brilliant ending to Six Feet Under) this young kid has posted a video letting the world know he won’t fall victim to the bullying he’s been at the hands of for years now. It’s a heartbreaking watch, be warned. Be sure to talk about it when chatting with other members on ManPlay and ask other men what bravery means to them while you’re at it. Until tomorrow!
